In defence of Charlie Hebdo

In defence of Charlie HebdoA defence since 1789 to the future…

We had Nazism (= Nazi totalitarianism), in the form of the regime of Germany from 1933 until 1945 with Adolf Hitler as its leader. Thus today, we cannot afford to have Islamism (= Islamic totalitarianism) with the Prophet Muhammad as its leader. A charismatic Prophet who lived centuries ago!

Charlie Hebdo is a French satirical weekly newspaper that publishes cartoons, articles and jokes. They need to publish all the cartoons, as soon as they are an imaginative product-art.

We are sorry our friends in the Muslim world. We need to advise you paraphrasing the words of Ludwig Wittgenstein: “Take it easy” and “Take your time” to understand.

No calls to Charlie Hebdo for self-censorship. Please, no calls from the French government to Charlie Hebdo for self-censorship. Please, no calls from the American government to Charlie Hebdo for self-censorship.

In the Western world (since the French Revolution of 1789) you are free to present Jesus Christ as the Hitler or Stalin of the Middle Ages, as a gay, as a propaganda icon, or as whatever you want! At the same time you can respect Jesus Christ as a historical figure. Then, you can publish caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, and at the same time you can respect Prophet Muhammad as a historical figure. In the Western world we respect Prophet Muhammad, but we can create a movie, a song, a cartoon with Him on a wheel-chair pushed by a Rabbi (see the cover picture above), or even pushed by Lady Gaga! You can do caricatures of everything. George Orwell created the great symbolic caricature of our world in the mythical must-read book Animal Farm (1945).

We support the editor Charb (Stephane Charbonnier) of Charlie Hebdo who actually stated: “we do caricatures of everyone, and above all every week, and when we do it with the Prophet, it’s called provocation.”

[Charlie Hebdo, Charb] I say to you my favourite English expression: Please sir, can I have some more…

Dimitris Eleas

Ps. Many years ago I created a text entitled Oranges and Mosques (available on the internet), in which the respect about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad is obvious. But, freedom of speech and expression is something different.
